Nobel Peace Laureates Convene in New York City for Global Conference on Yemen
March 1, 2019
As the devastating war in Yemen continues and with millions on the brink of starvation, four Noble Peace Laureates, Tawakkol Karman, Shirin Ebadi, Leymah Gbowee and Jody Williams, and distinguished guests will convene in New York City for a Global Conference on Yemen: Dimensions of The Humanitarian Crisis and Prospects Of Peace.
Tens of thousands of civilians, including women and children, have been killed. Eighty percent of the population is in urgent need of immediate assistance, and a considerable amount of the country has been destroyed. It is far past time to stop the war and put the country on a path to peace.
“With every passing day, women are forced to bury their children, who have been killed in the war or who have died of starvation. Yemen is undeniably the world's worst humanitarian crisis,” said Nobel Peace Laureate Tawakkol Karman. “In addition to devastating the country, the war in Yemen seriously threatens both regional and international peace and security. The war has to end. One more dead is one too many. The perpetrators of these atrocities should be held accountable, and the international community must support a peaceful transition and help rebuild the country,” Karman added. “The people of Yemen, particularly women, must be part of future negotiations and included in all efforts to restore the nation.”
The global conference is organized by the Tawakkol Karman Foundation and the Center on National Security at Fordham and will take place Thursday, March 7, from 8:30 am to 3:45 pm in the 12th Floor Lounge of Fordham University Lincoln Center, 113 W 60th St, New York, NY 10023.
